Tasmanian Oak

Custom Rustic Stain

Handley Matt Protection

Edithvale, VIC

This particular Tasmanian Oak floor is simply one of the most amazing and interesting jobs I've ever had the pleasure of doing. It's stunning.

The homeowners contacted me with a bit of a definitive vision of what they wanted for their very cool home in Edithvale. The tricky bit relaying what they had in mind so that I could create their vision. So, after a bit of sampling and testing we came up with a winning formula and it went something like this.

Firstly, we sanded the boards straight across the grain with some coarse 40 grit paper, then did the edges with an angle grinder and 24 grit paper. This left the floor looking gnarly but feeling way too rough. To counter that we then buffed over the floor several times with 80 grit sanding screens. This final sanding with the screens left it looking rough, but gave it a super smooth feel underfoot - perfect for what our goals were.

Once we got the sanding nailed it was time to get the final look happening. With some big ideas and a few different stains we came up with this unique custom colour.

With the sanding and colour down, it was now time to do the final bit which was apply the strongest coatings on the market to not only give it great looks, but just as importantly durability.

So there we have it. One of our most favourite floors of all time.

The boards were sanded across the grain with a 40 grit sandpaper

The edges were sanded with 24 grit using an angle grinder

The boards were next buffed with a fine screen to leave them looking rough

Not all of the old polyurethane was sanded off, adding to the rustic feel

We used a water-based stain to create our colour tone
