Spotted Gum is easily one of the most popular Australian flooring timbers on the market, and for very good reason—it is absolutely beautiful.
I still remember the first time I ever sanded a Spotted Gum floor. I'll admit, I went into it with some trepidation. When you sand a new timber species for the first time, you never quite know how it’s going to respond. Will it gum up the paper? Will it dull the sanding belts instantly?
With 'Spotty', I needn’t have worried. It sanded brilliantly from the very first pass with the big machine. Once we moved into the 'superfine' sanding stages, it took things to a whole new level of satisfaction. What we quickly learned is that Spotted Gum sands as beautifully as any timber out there. Because it responds so well to the machines, it also takes on finishing coats flawlessly. All up, we give it an A+.
The Modern Shift: From High Gloss to Subtle Sheen
Twenty to thirty years ago, everyone wanted high-gloss Spotted Gum floors. But nowadays, with modern low-sheen finishes being so vastly superior to what we used to have, we find ourselves laying down a lot of matte and satin finishes. It looks incredible. A lower sheen highlights every individual twist of grain, every subtle colour shift, and the true depth of its character without the harsh glare.
If you already have a Spotted Gum floor, consider yourself lucky. It possesses a rich color palette found nowhere else in the flooring world, backed by a natural hardness that rivals the most exotic timbers overseas. If you're building a new home, put Spotted Gum high on your wishlist. You will never regret it.

This beautiful Queensland Spotted Gum floor was a bit of a mess from the previous sanding effort... right down to having polyurethane all over the skirtings, the kitchen and up the walls. And, the owners lived with it like that for years.
Lisa and I came in and took it back to bare timber and re-finished it... without getting any on the walls, skirtings or kitchen.
Perched up on Oliver's Hill, Frankston, this cool townhouse has an engineered Spotted Gum floor, which was in need of some love. The boards had reversed cupped in places, meaning we had to sand a fair bit off to get them back down to being all flat n' nice again.
I'm a massive fan of Spotted Gum, and it's jobs like this one that keep me inspired and wanting to do more of them. They respond so well to the sanding machines that it makes them a pleasure to work on.
The client here was very fussy and knew exactly what he wanted... and, I like that. I'm always keen to work with folk who know what they like and aren't afraid to ask for it.
Here we have our typical re-sand of a Spotted Gum floor. Off with the old high-gloss two pac and down with a much more subtle Lo-Sheen finish.
By the time we weaved our magic, the floor was back to brand new ready for the new homeowner to move her family in, and start living.
