The Art of the Invisible Repair
Bringing a 90s Classic into the Modern Era
On this project, we were working with a typical 1990s build where the timber had been laid directly onto a concrete slab. Direct-to-slab boards mean serious hard work when you need to remove and replace sections—which is exactly what Lisa and I had to do here to accommodate a stunning, modernized kitchen layout.
Once the old boards were carefully coaxed out (with a fair bit of sweat and maybe a little swearing!), we finger-joined the new Blackbutt boards seamlessly into the existing floor. The result? A completely invisible repair.
That’s the beauty of Blackbutt. It’s an outstanding, resilient timber, and one of the few species where you can source fresh boards 20 or 30 years later and still achieve a flawless match. We finished the job with a 'superfine' sand and applied a highly durable, Lo-Sheen polyurethane coating for maximum protection. It looks brilliant and is built to last.
