Ringwood North, VIC
As we typically find in older homes, Baltic Pine with Black Japan covering the boards. If not covering the whole floor at least the perimeter is coated with the Black Japan. This allowed a colourful rug, or a hall runner to sit in the middle of the space, with the dark edges creating a picture frame effect.
Of course, years later we need to get rid of that old Black Japan to reveal the beauty of the Baltic underneath... and getting it off is often a monster job. But once it's gone it all becomes so worth the effort.
So it begins. We walk in and straight away we knew we were up for a challenge with that thick Black Japan around the edges of the Baltic Pine floor
There are a few tricks to help with getting the old black japan off the floorbaords, including spraying the floors with kerosene first to help break down old black gunk.
With most of the Black Japan gone the Baltic really starts to show what it brings to the room.
With all the heavy duty sanding out of the way, we now superfine sand the Baltic boards ready for finishing.
With these Baltic Pine boards having been protected from the sun being under the Black Japan, and heavy mats throughout it's life. With that protection from the UV rays they actually sanded down to a beautiful light tone. The lighter boards picks up the darker trim wonderfuly.
Lisa and I finished this floor off with a durable matte polyurethane, to provide an easy clean surface and maximum protection.
