Radiata Pine Floor

Handley Matt Protection

Blind Bight VIC

This Radiata Pine floor, in Blind Bight, is one of our most interesting floors of all time due to the history behind it.

The boards had already been sanded three times prior to Lisa and I turning up, and the last time they were done someone had stained them a dark Brown Japan  colour.

Because the boards had been sanded so many times in the past we felt that we needed to take it easy with the sanding process, to ensure we didn't sand through the tongues of the boards. Taking it gentle meant we didn't sand like maniacs and simply just took off the layers of finish and flattened out the boards...and because of our gentle approach, a hint of the stain from the previous guy stayed within the grain of the Pine, creating one of the coolest looks imaginable.

As you can see in the images there are sections of the grain that standout brilliantly, with dark hues and brown highlights not normally found in a clear finished Pine floor.

The yellow marks in some spots were caused by, most probably, a puppy piddling everywhere years ago from when the house was first built. This also points to why the boards were stained last time...to most likely hide the yellow urine stains.

Our initial finish was 2Pac polyurethane for build and strength with the final protection being Handley Matt for that absolutely gorgeous matte finish.

Removing the old brown stain has made such a difference to this home.

There we have it.

One of the most interesting Radiata Pine floors you could hope for.

Over the years I've been lucky enough to have sanded several Pine floors just like this one, where the stain has deeply penetrated into the grain creating this amazing effect.
